Philter is an Anti-Spam program that works with most common e-mail systems. But best of all it's free!

It works by sitting between your email client and your ISP's mail server. It can be run in the background on your own computer, or you could place it on a dedicated server machine, in effect creating your own POP3 server. Philter is essentially a POP3 email server, and filters out unwanted mail using a white list.

The white list is built automatically using a 'challenge-response' system. The first time a sender contacts you, they are asked by an automated message to confirm their email address. The process is one-time and hassle-free.

Senders can authorise in one of two ways - if they have a web-browser they can click on a link in the email to complete the verification. Alternatively they can reply to the email request, which when received by Philter, completes the verification process.

Once the system receives the confirmation, the sender's email address is white-listed so future messages from them are allowed through without further intervention. Whilst a sender's address is pending verification, mail from them is placed in a 'quarantine' list.

Philter supports importing/exporting of contacts in CSV format, so you don't have to build your white list from scratch, or annoy existing contacts.
