What is Neptune?

Neptune Web Server is a clean, fast and feature-rich web server you can run on your own computer. Neptune lets you host your own website, freeing you from restrictions like advertising or file size limits.

You can host your own website over a Local Area Network or Internet, share files, or test-out a page. Neptune supports password-protection and doesn't require a high specification machine or a fast connection, as caching and connection settings can be tailored to your needs.

What are the benefits?

Running your own web server has many benefits, like controlling your domain; also files don't have to be uploaded as they're hosted directly from your computer. You can run a web site over a Local Area Network (LAN) or the Internet. Share files, music, and ideas, or test-out a web page.

Neptune can run multiple websites side-by-side on the same computer over one IP address, allowing you to serve websites on different domains. The server interface has been widely acclaimed as friendly but powerful enough for both first-time and experienced users alike.

Neptune does not require a high performance computer or a fast connection to run. The latest incarnation has been completely rebuilt to be faster and more stable then ever before. The all-new serving engine achieves far greater transfer rates and can simultaneously serve thousands of clients from a standard PC.

	Virtual Hosting

Security

Neptune allows single files or whole directories may be password-protected, helping to keep your data private, and prevent malicious use of sensitive resources such as script executables. The security model is easy to manage and based on user access privileges; not only are resources within your website protected, you can also restrict certain program operations with a password to prevent unauthorised changes.

Reliability and Scalability

To test its performance under realistic operating conditions, the Silver Forge website was hosted on Neptune for a month (you may have seen this logo on the home page). No service outages or other problems were encountered for the duration of the test, demonstrating a high level of reliability.

Technical Details

	Implements HTTP/1.1 - the latest version of the protocol used by for web browsers and servers, whilst maintaining support with the older HTTP/1.0 for backwards compatibility. Features include Authentication, Ranged requests, Host field parsing, and persistent connections.

	CGI Support (CGI/1.1) - enabling dynamic content generation (e.g. websites customised to the user, message boards, etc).

	PHP support - use PHP scripting in your website. Other scripting languages are supported if they use a similar system to PHP (an executable to run that processes the code in the script). Additionally, you can specify which file extensions are processed.

	Neptune features 'Aliases', which allow you to make any folder on your computer appear as a sub-folder in your web site. For example, 'C:\My Documents' could be made accessible through the folder '\mydocs' in your web site.

	Multithreaded design enables Neptune 3 to benefit from multiprocessor and HyperThreaded systems, providing significant performance increases. The engine will scale to the number of CPUs in your system.

	When you're away from your computer, Neptune can be set-up to automatically upload the server address (the means of accessing your server over the Internet) to an FTP server of your choice. This facility ensures that you can always find the current address of the server from wherever you are.

	Full MIME-type conversion and HTTP-Basic authentication are provided as standard, to ensure a standards-compliant browsing experience across the broadest range of platforms.
